Practice Tracks for Guitar Players

Level 1 Guitar

Lesson 4:
Notes on the E-String

Summary of this Lesson:

In this lesson we learn the notes along the E-strings. Knowing these note positions will help you as you go along with notes on the other strings.

This is a pretty straightforward lesson. Just play along with the video. You might want to say the notes as you play them, to help you memorize the positions.

Use the proper fingering

We've tried to emphasize using all four fingers when fingering the frets. Now we want to expand that idea a bit. There is a tendency, after playing G on the third fret, to want to just move up your third finger to play the rest of the notes along the string.

Try not to do this. Instead, after you play G, move your first finger up the 5th fret (A), and play A, B and C using finger 1 (A), finger 3 (B) and finger 4 (C).

Then slide you hand up again so finger 1 plays D at E10 and your 3rd finger plays E (the octave) at E12.

After this exercise work on the following:

Exercise: G Major Scale starting at low E3

Song: Ode to Joy in G (starting on E3)
