These are the shapes most often played as barre chords. The importance of barre chords is that they can be played all the way up the neck. For example, the E shape is an F chord at fret 1, a G chord at fret 3, A at fret 5, B at fret 7, C at fret 8, and so on.

The A shape is usually played by fingering the three frets with the 3rd finger.
