A Minor Pentatonic Shapes 1 and 2





  1. The first shape is the one you are likely to learn first. There is some inconsistency about which number to call this shape. I prefer calling it Shape 1 because it is the easiest one to remember.

  2. Shape 2 begins on the 2nd note of Shape 1.

  3. Because of this ability to harmonically "fit" with most melodies and chord sequences, you don't really have to know what notes you are playing when improvising over a tune. This makes it ideal for improvising over melodies and chord sequences.
