Two things...

1. They often go to a "suspended" version of the chord before changing to the next one.
For example Asus4 goes from B2 to B3, Esus4 goes from G1 to G2, Dsus4 goes from E2 to E3.

2. The guitarist often adds an individual string highlight. This gives the accompaniment a nice bit of added colour, especially over the quieter verse parts.
